Work.

Today I am grateful for the good old-fashioned concept of work. We discussed [at Family Home Evening Monday night] that we don't really have a true understanding of what it means to have chores. Not compared to the chores of the generations that preceded us, anyway. Life is pretty convenient. And ease-driven. And pretty great, if you choose to see the great parts.
(Thanks, Yankee Girl)
When I talked to a friend yesterday about having the kids rake leaves, he said "Oh, no. This is 2009. My kids' job is to get good grades. They don't do that kind of stuff."
And as Part II to being grateful for work, I'm also grateful to be IN CHARGE. See that pointing finger? Don't think it doesn't waggle.

Great post today. Nothing better than a "waggling" finger! :)

I think your friends comment is unfortunate. Too many kids don't know the meaning of work. Sad.

You are a great example(of a finger wagger!)

Will they come to my house and rake when they are finished at your house? I don't have trees in my yard but all around me and the leaves all land in the back yard. I'm hoping to get out there and get something done after I get my kitchen floor washed. And your friend who is just interested in their children getting good grades--that's fine, but they need to be taught responsibility and work never hurt any one. They'd better get a grip or they'll have a problem as years go on. Teaching children work ethics and responsibility is extremely important--part of the values you instill in your children. Sorry to get on my high horse, but that was the wrong answer for your friend. Your children will thank you years down the road for all they have learned from you.

"They don't do that kind of stuff?" I'm flabbergasted. My favorite is when I see a pack of chubby teenagers out shooting hoops while a hired person is mowing their lawn.

Flush the cell phones. Give the dishrags and shovels instead.

You are a good mom and a great example of hard work.
Kids need to learn to work, if they get that concept, the good grades should follow!

Wow! That's great! I had forgotten how big it is out there! It's beautiful! How's the swamp? I love you!

What a clever way to take care of the leaves. We need to get to ours, hopefully before the snows come.

Your kids are lucky to have you teaching them to work hard. I think it's one of the most valuable things you can pass on to your children.
