Making Bread

Last Saturday, I hosted a bread-making workshop at the church. I really thought it would be me plus one other woman. Much to my delight, there were 13 of us making bread together! We made white loaves and wheat bread, and our youngest bread-makers were ages 5 and 7.
None of the participants had ever successfully made bread before, and everyone went home with a beautiful rising loaf to bake for dinner.

There's nothing like warm bread from the oven. Bread IS the staff of life.

There is nothing better than the smell of a yummy loaf of bread baking in the oven. Good for you for teaching them something that they will be able to use the rest of their lives. Here's to many more successful bread making days for these ladies!

Marilyn, I LOVED that there were kids participating! I tried to convince some of mine to come, but to no avail.

Becky, SO true. Baking bread is one of those smells that I hope is in heaven. AND may the gentlemen enjoy making the bread, too!

NICE!
I'm slowly gaining confidence with my bread making. We had homeade (by ME) rolls last night and they were YUMMY!
And nothing beats a loaf of bread as a gift for a neighbor or friend. I was a lucky recipient today :)

NOTHING and I mean NOTHING beats a homemade loaf fresh from the oven, topped with butter (and or honey) and a glass of milk.

Me too, me too! Glad your class went well. Our stake RS did it for womens conference they felt there was such a need for something some of us consider basic stuff.

Unlike most baking, bread-making can be very manly, especially in a commercial kitchen where you use an 80 quart mixer and a crane to move the product around.

Dividing, rolling, shaping and proofing are also very therapeutic, as you have plenty of time for contemplation as it is one of a very few tasks that can not be rushed if you are to achieve great end results.

The other great thing about learning to make bread, once you have the basic methods down, you have innumerable options to make each loaf your own artistic expression, multi-grain, white, wheat, sour-dough, rye, marble, tortillas, etc, or divide the dough into loafs, dinner rolls, knots, or fry it up in a pan and load it up with all your favorite toppings.

Bread is also the perfect tool on the dinner plate, the ultimate tool for the clean-plate club, if used properly it can sop up every last drop of sauce from the meal.

Man cannot live by bread alone, but it is a good start.

LL-I'm glad you were on the receiving end. You're right; nothing beats it!
Aaron-AMEN.
ep-me too!
Amy-That's exactly why this class happened. It IS a basic, and it's not hard to do. (BUT, very rewarding)
Tom-GREAT comment. I can only imagine some of the bread greatness that must come from your oven.

I need your class on bread making. I've been thinking of attempting it (I've been thinking this for the last 2 weeks now) but I am a little scared--yeast scares me.

Yankee Girl: Be not afraid! Yeast is quite gentle
(and not hard to work with).
:)

Yankee Girl, Fear not, yeast is only in use for the leavening of the dough, as soon as it is in the oven the yeast dies in the heat. The only think to be aware of is the more yeast you use the more the bread rises, but this will also make it harder to cut and use.

Remember to rise, punch, divide, shape and rise, before baking and you will be rewarded with perfect reviews.

You're making me hungry for homemade bread. I remember my Mom making two loaves of oatmeal bread, and between the both of us, we ate one loaf before dinner! You make wonderful rolls, Jen. Love them! Your Mom does a superb job as well.

I have fond memories on fresh hot cinnamon rolls from the talented Priscilla. It almost made getting up at 0 dark 30 for seminary worth it.

I NEED your class-you make yummy bread and rolls--mine just don't compare, unless you count the rolls around my midsection--then I've got you beat! No contest!

Wow! Everyone in that place looks great! I wish I was there to make bread in relief society with you! But one slight glitch...I'm not in relief society!

XOXO
